FAQ: Bluz: A cloud-connected, Bluetooth LE development kit
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

What exactly comes as part of the kit?

Each bluz DK is one development board with a Cortex ARM M0 process and BLE radio. This development board plugs into a series of shields to extend functionality, such as the battery shield or the accelerometer shield. So one Bluz DK is just the board and the shields and accessories can be purchased on top of that Last updated: Wed, Apr 15 2015 3:41 pm EDT

How will I program Bluz?

You have a few options. First, you can bring Bluz online and use the Web IDE. Any of our gateways will bring Bluz online automatically. You can also program Bluz using the J-Link shield and a J-Link Lite or other programmer (not included) if you want to program the board locally. Last updated: Wed, Apr 15 2015 3:46 pm EDT

Will the accelerometer shield and battery shield work with my Core/Photon?

Bluz is pin compatible with the Core/Photon, so yes, the accelerometer shield will work with the Core/Photon. The battery shield will not, though, as a Core/Photon cannot run from a coin cell battery. Last updated: Wed, Apr 15 2015 3:46 pm EDT

What if I want to add more items to my pledge?

No problem! Add the value below to your pledge and we will send you a survey to make your selections after the campaign Bluz DK - $19 Battery Shield - $15 ADXL335 Shield - $19 Gateway - $39 Gateway Shield - $25 J-Link Shield - $12 Last updated: Wed, Apr 15 2015 4:31 pm EDT

Can I control bluz locally, with only a connect to my phone, without the cloud?

Yes, you can. Bluz will run on two different “channels” of data (basically, two distinct GATT characteristics). The gateway will use one of these channels to forward data to the cloud. The other will send data locally to the phone. So you can program anything you want directly from the phone, you don’t have to have the cloud. Last updated: Thu, Apr 16 2015 9:52 am EDT

Why is there no USB on-board?

The microcontroller (MCU) we are using does not support USB. This means to add USB, we would have to add another device that converts USB to serial or some other protocol that the MCU understands. This would add cost and complexity to bluz, and we wanted to keep it as simple and cheap as possible. Last updated: Fri, Apr 17 2015 9:33 am EDT

Yes, you can see it on our forums: http://neighborhood.bluz.io/t/bluz-dk-pinout-preview/64 Last updated: Fri, Apr 24 2015 12:42 pm EDT

So, how do I pronounce bluz?

Like the music or the brothers, blues! Last updated: Wed, Apr 15 2015 8:46 pm EDT

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
